Merck Manual

Lawyers who practice in the area of medical law are probably quite familiar with the Merck Manual in print form.  We have this product in print but it is also available in a searchable format on the Internet.  The print version is over 2800 pages long and covers the symptoms/signs, diagnosis, prognosis and treatment of every medical condition, grouped by region of the body.  For example, Gastrointestinal Disorders covers such things as Esophageal Diverticula to simple complaints such as Hiccups and Halitosis.  It would seem that the only shortcoming of the Manual would be its lack of phonetic pronunciations of the disorders (can you pronounce "Coccidioidomycosis"?).

The web version of the Merck Manual is fully searchable by keyword, or you can drill down from the table of contents.  The keyword search function will give you results based on relevancy percentages and a brief excerpt from the area referencing your keyword much like any other Internet search engine.  The table of contents search allows you to click on, for example, the section titled Neurological Disorders and then choose the chapter on Dementia and Delirium which gives you a general discussion on the topic and the option to click right into the section solely dealing with Dementia (no reason I chose that as an example...no reason at all).  http://www.merck.com/mmpe/index.htm
